The term ‘antichrist’ is found only in John’s epistles (1 John 2:18; 1 John 2:22; 1 John 4:3; 2 John 7). He designates, on the one hand, a personage, adversary of God, appearing at the end of time, and on the other hand the many deceivers who are his precursors (Mt 24:5, Mt 24:24) and who are animated by the same spirit. According to these texts, an antichrist is one who does not recognize Jesus as the incarnate Son of God and who advocates for this negation.

The Antichrist who will manifest his authority over all the earth is mentioned elsewhere in Scripture with other qualifiers that depict his attitude and works.

Greek uses the word ‘antichristos’. But the French language does not recognize the word ‘antichrist’ which means ‘against Christ’, but only the word ‘antichrist’ which means ‘before Christ’. 4. The manifestation of the Antichrist

The false prophet (the beast rising from the earth) will sustain the Antichrist with his miracles (Rev. 13:12-13; 2 Thess 2:9-10) and economic pressures (Rev. 13:16-17).

5. The duration of the reign of the Antichrist

After gradually extending his reign (first part of the Tribulation, 3 and a half years), the Antichrist will exercise his world dictatorship for 42 months, or 3 and a half years (Rev. 13:5b; cf. Mt 24:22).

His reign will end with the coming of Jesus Christ to earth (2 Thess 2:8) at the terrible battle of Armageddon (Rev. 16:13-16; Rev. 19:17-21), which will consummate the defeat of the Antichrist.

The Antichrist and the false prophet will then be cast into the lake of fire (Rev. 19:20); this final destiny of the Antichrist is also revealed by his name ‘son of perdition’ (2 Thess 2:3; meaning: ‘he who is doomed to perdition’). Satan’s action on earth will also cease at that time (Rev. 20:1-2), for a period of a thousand years.

Le terme « antichrist » ne se trouve que dans les épîtres de Jean (1 Jn 2:18; 1 Jn 2:22; 1 Jn 4:3; 2 Jn 7). Il y désigne, d’une part un personnage, adversaire de Dieu, apparaissant à la fin des temps, et d’autre part les nombreux séducteurs qui sont ses précurseurs (Mt 24:5, Mt 24:24) et qui sont animés du même esprit. Selon ces textes, un antichrist est celui qui ne reconnaît pas Jésus comme le Fils de Dieu incarné et qui milite pour cette négation.

5. La durée du règne de l’Antichrist
