Greek uses the word ‘antichristos’. But the French language does not recognize the word ‘antichrist’ which means ‘against Christ’, but only the word ‘antichrist’ which means ‘before Christ’. As the Antichrist will come before Christ’s return in glory (but after his coming in the clouds for the rapture of the Church), the term Antichrist is not wrong. In this study, however, we will use the term Antichrist, closer to the original.

The book of Revelation shows that three people will intervene to rule the earth at the end of time. These persons are presented in a symbolic form:

the dragon, which is Satan (Rev. 12:3, Rev. 12:9);
the beast rising from the sea, which is the Antichrist (Rev. 13:1, Rev. 13:5-8 compared to 2 Thess 2:3-4);
the beast rising from the earth (Rev. 13:11), which is ‘the false prophet’ (Rev. 13:13-14 compared to Rev. 19:20).

2. The characteristics of the reign of the Antichrist

Deceduction by miraculous acts of various kinds (Rev 13:3; Rev 13:13-15; 2 Thess 2:9; cf. Mk 13:22-23);
establishment of a reign that gives the impression of bringing peace and security (cf. 1 Thess 5:3);
development of a universal religious system through the worship of the Antichrist himself (Rev. 13:4, Rev. 13:8, Rev. 13:12; 2 Thess 2:4);
establishment of a universal dictatorship (Rev 13:3b, Rev 13:7b-8, Rev 13:12, Rev. 13:16-17) with extermination of opponents (Rev. 13:15);
economic monopoly of the state (Rev. 13:16-17);
persecution of the Saints (Rev. 13:7; Rev. 13:15; Rev. 20:4), that is, to those, Jews and non-Jews alike, who declare their faith in God and Jesus Christ.

During this reign, God’s judgments will fall on earth because of the general apostasy (abandonment of faith) (Revelation chapters 6, 8, 9, 16).

Throughout history, Nero, Hitler, Stalin and others have been considered precursors of the Antichrist. The behavior of these men and their actions have shown in part how far a system similar to that which the Antichrist will establish can lead.

3. The personality of the Antichrist

The Antichrist is

a bitter opponent of God (2 Thess 2:4);
so proud as to desire to rise above God and proclaim himself God (2 Thess 2:4; John 5:43);
the ungodly par excellence (lit.: man without law) (2 Thess 2:3, 2 Thess 2:8-9);
powerful and power-hungry (Rev. 13:7).

4. The manifestation of the Antichrist

Satan (the dragon) will give power and authority to the Antichrist (Rev. 13:2; 2 Thess 2:9; cf. Mt 4:8-10).

The Antichrist (the beast rising from the sea) will take power over the earth (Rev. 13:7).

The false prophet (the beast rising from the earth) will sustain the Antichrist with his miracles (Rev. 13:12-13; 2 Thess 2:9-10) and economic pressures (Rev. 13:16-17).

5. The duration of the reign of the Antichrist

After gradually extending his reign (first part of the Tribulation, 3 and a half years), the Antichrist will exercise his world dictatorship for 42 months, or 3 and a half years (Rev. 13:5b; cf. Mt 24:22).

His reign will end with the coming of Jesus Christ to earth (2 Thess 2:8) at the terrible battle of Armageddon (Rev. 16:13-16; Rev. 19:17-21), which will consummate the defeat of the Antichrist.

The Antichrist and the false prophet will then be cast into the lake of fire (Rev. 19:20); this final destiny of the Antichrist is also revealed by his name ‘son of perdition’ (2 Thess 2:3; meaning: ‘he who is doomed to perdition’). Satan’s action on earth will also cease at that time (Rev. 20:1-2), for a period of a thousand years.

Le terme « antichrist » ne se trouve que dans les épîtres de Jean (1 Jn 2:18; 1 Jn 2:22; 1 Jn 4:3; 2 Jn 7). Il y désigne, d’une part un personnage, adversaire de Dieu, apparaissant à la fin des temps, et d’autre part les nombreux séducteurs qui sont ses précurseurs (Mt 24:5, Mt 24:24) et qui sont animés du même esprit. Selon ces textes, un antichrist est celui qui ne reconnaît pas Jésus comme le Fils de Dieu incarné et qui milite pour cette négation.

L’Antichrist qui manifestera son autorité sur toute la terre est mentionné ailleurs dans l’Ecriture avec d’autres qualificatifs qui dépeignent son attitude et ses oeuvres.

Le grec utilise le mot « antichristos ».
